When the curtain goes up, the Stage Manager is the person helping to keep the whole production running smoothly behind the scenes.
Working closely with the Director, cast, technical team and backstage crew, the Stage Manager helps make sure everyone knows where they need to be and what needs to happen next.
A Stage Manager may be responsible for:
organising and coordinating the backstage team
making sure props and scenery are ready
keeping track of entrances, exits and scene changes
checking the stage before each performance
giving backstage cues and coordinating with lighting and sound
making sure performers are ready when needed
helping manage quick changes and unexpected problems
keeping the performance running safely and on schedule
making sure everything is reset and ready for the next show
It can be busy, demanding and occasionally a little chaotic — but it is also one of the most rewarding roles in live theatre.
A good Stage Manager is calm, organised and able to think on their feet. They are often the person quietly holding everything together while the audience enjoys the show.
