For some CAST productions, you might find a Prompter tucked discreetly away at the side of the stage — although not every show has one.
When we do, they follow the performance carefully with a copy of the script, ready to provide a little helping hand if an actor suddenly finds that a line has completely disappeared from their memory!
It takes concentration, patience and very good listening skills. The trick is knowing when someone genuinely needs a prompt — and when they’re simply enjoying a particularly dramatic pause!
The audience may barely know they’re there, but when those dreaded words just won’t come, a quiet voice from the wings can be very welcome indeed!
